Little arrows

while studying the road markings Ive become interested in arrows and what you can do with them. A woman crashed outside my house sunday night and took down 2 posts. she was ok thank god. I managed to get one of the signs before the gardai came. Iv added arrows cut out from photos i have taken of road markings. although this may seem like im going off track it tyies in with my walking while drawing sketchbook.

Road markings

While looking at the road markings i discovered that the are an artform in themselves. For the time being i am just going to work in my sketchpad figureing out how i can use or manipulate these shapes on the roads. Here are a few examples of road marking art.

Markings

Concentrating on photographs of different road markings. I like the face that the movement of traffic over them everyday has worn some of them so that they are jagged edged and patchy. I will look at other ways of recreating this.

I really like the way the pages are done in this book. The buttons remind me of traffic lights. I will use this technique.

books

I thought i could stick with my theme from the start developing the walking while drawing sketchbook maybe into a series of books. My project is mainly based on the movement  in the city to be specific me taking a walk trying to capture the hussle and bussle of the city. I have also started looking at cars and the components that make a car. eg rubber, metal, leather. I will try to create a second book with rubbings of mt travels. I am being inspired by city and markings while i am walking.I would like to create a book inspired by cars and road markings similar in style to the one above. Will use photographs, rubbings, paint and mixed media to create the inside pages.

Walking while drawing.

I have decided to take my walking while drawing drawings out of the book ang onto a kind of map that shows the routes I have been. eg. A walk in thw city center, A walk in Camden town. I have created the maplike structure to stand as to resemble buildings.

Here are some snippets from my video piece which i am hoping to edit in due course. Will make them relate to my work more. Hav to try and get the hang of the programme first. Any help much appreciated!!!

Started to make books. Made a test bird book. The book as its wings and the body will have the writing on it i think. Didnt realise there are so many ways to make books. hope it goes well. Im excited but nervous incase it all goes pete tong!!!

Currently finishing.

I am currently trying to finish my wire and aeroboard piece.....Ran out of wire so cant afford any till next week. may have to compromise. In the meantine i have been looking at movement around the city and in towns. i am still using pastelles to give movement to picturers by leaving a trail of colour. i am now trying to bring this off the page into something 3d also. I will try to use a manikin or stuff my clothes so to look like or even gesture a human body. I will attach plastics and crep paper. anything light and the same colour as the clothes. I will set up fans infront of the piece so the trail of colour appears like in the drawings. Now where to get a manakin????

Movement.

I like the idea that in movement and motion there is a trail of movemnet following the subject. I used oil pastelles on photographs to give movement to the photograph. i enjoy and like the look of thhis technique. i took my areoboard piece apart and looked into some different styles and tested colours i could use. hopefully now it will come together ok.

And moving on...

While doing my walking while drawing Diary I have been attracted to the amount of movements in cities. for the bigger cities such as london i do a type of landscape drawing similar to david Lilburns. As for my other drawings I concentrate on different things as I walk. I try to catch the busyness and rush of the city in  my drawings. Because everyone has a place to be and somewhere to go as quick as they possibly can especially in london they dont stop to appreciate the city, the colours, the buildings and the textures. I use washes in my pieces when i get home. The colours are usually light and what i have in my memory. although the might not corrosponde with what i am drawing. eg. a tree could be yellow an red. The reason i do this is because i think it gives a sort of busyness to the drawings. While in cities i have taken photographs. The subjects are frozen in the photos. I willplay around wit oil pastelle to create the effect of movement in  these still photos.   

That Thing!!!

Started my wire and aeroboard piece after ages of planning it this time instead of jumping into the deep end. Always plan things and test colours composition ect.!! lesson learned. Ive been thinking of makin a short video piece on the movement i have recorded. I keep my drawing while walking. I like the idea of something stationary and lots of movement around it. I also finished my self portrait photograph but cant make up my mind which one to use. . All in all alot going on and alot of ideas. Find it really hard to stick with one!!! thats my biggest problem at the moment.

Some slow shutter speed movement photos i took at the start of the year. trying to in coperate them into my piece with the wire and aero board. Could maybe line them in a border or place them on a road.

Wind is crazy 2nite. Some really cool sounds. If only I had gotten that sound recorder from College. god dam it! Im still continuing with my journey drawings. Looking over the videos i took in england. Really like how my 3d piece is coming together. Its bringing the drawing to life almost. im enjoying working on a big scale. Its a new challenge and something i cant see myself getting bored of easily. Think the rube golberg machine idea has gone out the window. Not for me. I enjoyed painting on photographs. Cant wait to do some monoprints and get this 3d piece finished. Not to sure weither to add colour to it as seen in my note book or paint the wire. I will try use some light washes of colour and if it goes wrong ill paint white over it again. Also like the idea of pouring paint while moving. (in a car, on a bike, walking, running ect.) will have some pics of work up shortly.

Really liked this video piece in the Tait by Igor and Svetlana. It involved alot of movement and i felt that i could corrospond with it through my wind drawings and other work.

Back from a great weekend in London. Got inspired at the tate modern. Would love to do some huge pieces of work.
